Background & Introduction

Lesa Walton Qualified as a registered nurse at St Andrews Hospital, Bow, London in 1985. Since qualifying Lesa has worked in a variety of settings including Herts Social Services as an inspector of care homes and independent hospitals.

Throughout Lesa’s career her passion for better quality nursing and medical services for patients has been unwavering. Lesa believes this is particularly pertinent for people who need to stay in hospital long term. Many of such people do not know what the future holds, or when, or if they will return home. For these people it is not a matter of tolerating poor food, lack of privacy/dignity, boredom etc. for a few days or weeks until they go home as they could be hospitalised for many months. No space for personal belongings, no privacy when your visitors call and the worst thing of all watching other people around you come in and go home.

Lesa has worked in and managed a number of care units specifically for people with enduring health problems. Some years ago Lesa recognised the benefits to people with long recovery periods or terminal illness, of having their own private space and sharing communal areas with people who are in a similar situation to them.

Although there are such specialist services, Lesa witnessed poor standards of accommodation and care within these units during the 5 year period that she worked as an inspector of care homes and hospitals.

It was these experiences that inspired Lesa in her mission to set up Chesham Care and create a nursing centre which would provide leading class accommodation and care to this vulnerable and often overlooked patient group.
